Stemming the tide: the fight to increase female participation in ICT

Writing on the day the Herald newspaper reported the decline in the number of pupils sitting Highers in “maths and core science subjects”, it’s hard not to feel some concern about the future for STEM education in this country.  Reasons for the decline are debated amongst academics, but according to the Herald it may be due to a perception that “science subjects are more difficult to study” and/or an unintended consequence of the new Curriculum for Excellence causing pupils to take fewer subjects in their early years at school and thus reducing their options at Higher.

Whatever the cause, it’s not good news.  Equally important and/or depressing is that there are few girls who study STEM subjects.  We’ve written about this before on the Be-IT blog (as have many others) and now the Scottish Government and Skills Development Scotland have jointly commissioned Napier University’s Employment Research Initiative to conduct research to investigate the gender imbalance within ICT and digital technologies in the country, with a view to helping address the issue.

There is a short questionnaire, aimed at “anyone in Scotland who is currently working in the sector, who manages or recruits those in ICT roles, or who teaches on or studies a relevant college or university course”, and we’d encourage as many of you as possible to take part.
