Forward to the future – what do Be-IT staff want/what will technology look like in 30 years' time?

Back to the Future II was released in 1989, some 26 years ago.  For those who don’t know the story, essentially it involves an American teenager called Marty McFly who goes forward in time (courtesy of a DeLorean sports car – don’t ask) to 21st October 2015, where he finds a book that has all the results of major sporting events. He realises that he can go back to his own time and make a fortune betting but then is dissuaded by his colleague (Doc).  Unfortunately, the baddie (Biff) manages to steal the DoLorean, then goes back to the past to give it to his younger self, gets the book and (being a low sort with no scruples worth speaking of) makes a mint from gambling on the correct results.  There are all sorts of other things, involving Marty’s parents, but essentially the good guys go back to the future again and burn the book with all the results and everything is hunky dory again.

In amongst the welter of articles celebrating the fact that it’s today (21st October) that this all ‘happened’, I thought that Be-IT ought to put its equivalent of the DoLorean sports car into gear and consider what the world might look like in 2041.  Given that Back to the Future II featured ‘hoverboards’ (which, sort-of, exist today) and ‘flying cars’, it is instructive to consider where we might be 26 or so years hence. So all my colleagues have been applying their formidable intellects to the question and this is what we, at Be-IT, think the future holds (or doesn’t)…

Michael:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
We will colonise the moon… The LCROSS probe discovered a dozen 2 gallon buckets of water in the form of ice, In a carter at the lunar south pole…. I think this will be something that’s done in the next 30 years.
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time: Eat all I want without getting fat…. Our ability to manipulate genes holds massive promise. Scientists have already re-engineered a gene that controls obesity in rats. And yes… they could eat everything without ever gaining weight!

Alma:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
There will be no Rhinos left on the planet in 30 years’ time if consumers in Asia continue to believe that ground up Rhino horns help cure cancer and low libidos.
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time: I’d like to see the end of all animal cruelty within the next 3 years but I’ll cope if it’s 30 years!.

Freddie:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
People will be able to plug their phones directly into their neural cortex and stream everything that happens to them. Ever.
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time: People will choose not to plug their phones into their neural cortex……….

Ami:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
I think that the power of advancing technology will take over! I can see in 30 years that computers will overtake the influence humans have on day to day aspects.  I think most things will be robotified… (if that’s a word).
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time:  I would love to see Scotland go on and be regulars in the Football World Cup, might be a huge wish but one can only hope! We can only get better

Ailsa:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
Fridges will place orders for food themselves.
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time:  Eradication of the common cold.

Caroline:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
Something like google glass will be perfected and it will allow people to walk round with a heads-up display using augmented reality: it will be the next great leap in social media and advertising and in 30 years people will be saying ”Remember iPhones, how basic were they?”
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time: Full dive technology - which will allow you put on a headset that can upload your consciousness to the computer, allowing you to operate it using your mind from within a virtual environment.

Stuart:
One thing that will happen in 30 years’ time:
I shall be dribbling down my chin and wondering who I am!!
One thing you’d like to happen in 30 years’ time: I really hope that a cure for Cancer has been found by this time as it is a disease which damages so many people and their families.
