A few weeks ago, on our blog pages, we wrote about CodeClan, Scotland’s new digital academy. Rab Campbell, Employer Engagement Director at CodeClan, also wrote a blog with some interesting statistics on coding being the lingua franca of the 21st Century. CodeClan, which is supported by Scottish Government, exists to bring new people into the digital industry through an immersive 16-week coding course
It is well recognised that the digital industry requires 11,000 new entrants each year with only ~4,500 arriving through traditional routes. ScotlandIS, the trade body for the industry, has said ”the shortage of skilled professionals threatens to halt the growth of the industry … we are confident that practical solutions such as CodeClan will address this skills shortage and help the industry to flourish and drive forward the economy.”
I couldn’t agree more. As a recruitment firm my team and I have direct, daily experience of the very real problems businesses face in sourcing IT talent, particularly coders.
That is why Be-IT Resourcing is delighted to announce this new scholarship. It is the third scholarship to be made available and the first to be offered by a recruitment company. The scholarship is aimed at an economically disadvantaged student who wouldn’t be able to study with CodeClan without our support. We will pay the selected student’s course fees of £4,500.
Being part of the Scottish digital industry’s eco-system, we want to play our part and to make a contribution - to give something back. Be-IT will cover the fees for someone with great problem solving skills and who is passionate about learning to code, but who can’t afford to learn how to. Through this we aim to make a small contribution to Scotland’s future economic prosperity. Talent is scarce – and people without the financial wherewithal to enter the industry deserve a chance.
Historically, digital employers have drawn their recruits from STEM graduates. But the world is changing and we desperately need people from much more diverse backgrounds. CodeClan can transform people’s careers and their lives over sixteen weeks. They specialise in taking people from a wide range of backgrounds and quickly making them into highly credible, job ready, entry level software developers.
Rab Campbell commented, “Recruitment firms are generally perceived as being the only sector in our industry to prosper in a tight recruitment market. It is therefore enormously encouraging that Gareth and his team at Be-IT are providing this scholarship. It marks them out as a progressive organisation, one committed to the industry and to Scotland, and one prepared to provide real, practical, support to ensure we get the best talent available into our industry.”
For anyone who wants to apply, this is what you have to do… in up to 500 words tell us why you want to join the CodeClan academy. Send your application to: email@example.com A short-list will be drawn up and asked to come for face to face interviews, after which one person will be selected for the CodeClan course and, hopefully, a great future career in computing.
