With a name like John Walker, you’d assume our newest Consultant would be a whisky drinker. Turns out he’s far too young for that sort of thing, preferring Peroni (other continental lagers are available) but he does have very definite views on CVs. Read on and all will be revealed…
What other jobs have you done apart from being a recruiter?
A long, long time ago I worked in a supermarket. I then did foreign exchange while studying at university. Subsequently, I took a job in technical support and found it wasn't for me. I was then taken into Spring Technology after that - which was my first job in recruitment.
What is your biggest disaster at work (anywhere)?
While working in the foreign exchange office, a customer wanted to change sterling into euros. They asked for €1400 and by mistake I gave them €1300!
What make a good recruiter?
From my perspective, I enjoy listening to candidates and clients describing how they do their jobs: this is important because it improves my knowledge of IT. I am always available for my candidates or clients and also have a competitive personality.
Favourite food and drink and where in the world would you like to be when you are having them?
Italian food with a cold bottle of Peroni, in Rome.
Recommend a restaurant and/or bar for us?
Nonna’s Kitchen and Bramble
What’s your view of the market just now – where are the real challenges?
My experience is that the market is extremely competitive, in some areas candidates are like hens' teeth and with every agency looking at similar requirements candidates often get spoken to very quickly and covered.
What do candidates need to do better to help you get them a job?
Definitely stop sending CV’s over in PDF and also keeping the CV to the point. The problem with PDFs is that they are sometimes difficult to format into other documents.
Favourite (non work) website and why?
Youtube.com – If I don’t know how to do something I usually find out how to here. It also has music and TV etc.
Favourite (work) website and why?
LinkedIn – continuously updated database of candidates and clients within IT.
Favourite techie gadget?
Iphone 6S (but I’ll soon be buying the iPhone 7)
