What other jobs have you done apart from being a recruiter?
My first job was in recruitment back in 2008 and I’ve been doing it ever since…. I must like it!
What it your biggest disaster at work (anywhere)?
I think that would have to be sending four candidates to the wrong location for an interview when I first started out = don’t trust Google maps…
Do you think that techies make good recruiters, and if so why (or if not, why not)?
From my own experience, and loving tech myself, it’s definitely good to have an interest in what the candidates are doing/showing a real interest in - say, an Android Developer - and seeing what apps they are making and how they do it! It also means I can chat about new technology that is being developed and ask their thoughts on it.
Who in the Be-IT office makes you laugh, and why?
Ami Islam - he is some character, I can’t go into to much detail, but he always has YouTube open showing me some funny videos!
Why is IT recruitment different from other recruiting jobs (e.g. High Street)?
Based on my interest in tech, I think IT Recruitment is perfect for me. You have a great variety of roles to recruit and you speak to candidates from all different backgrounds and with hugely varying experiences. You also get the inside knowledge on what companies are doing - what they are developing or what projects are being pushed through.
What is the funniest thing you’ve seen in your recruitment career?
I once had a candidate who passed wind during an interview and was, unsurprisingly, very embarrassed and apologised to the recruiting manager at the time. I couldn’t believe it when the candidate called and told me, after asking how it went… we both laughed…
Favourite food and drink and where in the world would you like to be when you are having them?
Mmmm beer……. In a pub, after a long week in the office!
Recommend a restaurant and/or bar for us?
The Bombay Lounge in Dalkeith for an Indian…. I go for the Vindaloo. It's a great place with a fantastic atmosphere.
What’s your view of the market just now – where are the real challenges?
I’m sure I’ll be echoing my colleagues but it’s finding the really good candidates. We have lots and lots of jobs but finding the perfect candidate can be tricky!
Getting feedback from the interview is sometimes a real struggle. If the client likes the candidate we do push to offer as quickly as we can to secure them. People can move on very quickly from being on the market.
We also find it difficult because we only call candidates who we think are a really good fit for a role. Some of our competitors call, call, call - and it means candidates tar us with the same brush …. We only call if we have something good!
What do candidates need to do better to help you get them a job?
Be very clear on the reasons they are looking and have a good think about the next step. If we can get this clear from the start it makes the full process easy to manage; also if a counter-offer comes along it helps us remind the candidates why they were looking in the first place.

Facebook / YouTube / Twitter / Instagram (App) / SnapChat (App) – I’m lonely….. I find them very addictive and can spend hours swiping through!
Favourite (work) website and why?
The Be-IT Resourcing website of course… (they made me say it) it’s the first thing I logon to in the morning and the last thing I close at night; also I do love LinkedIn!
If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you’d buy?
I’d buy a very big house a nice car and then give the other half the money to look after…. Or I’d have it spent in a week!
