What other jobs have you done apart from being a recruiter?
Many, my first job was probably having a half bit at the tatties, then as a schoolboy I was up at 5am to deliver milk. I don’t think either job exists now! As a student I worked every summer in a factory putting prunes, peas, raspberries and strawberries into cans. I’ve also worked in bars and hotels before choosing to pursue my career in recruitment. 

What it your biggest disaster at work (anywhere)?
One New Year morning at a 5 star hotel I was tasked with manning a Bloody Mary bar at the entrance to the Breakfast room. I think the plan was that a fresh Bloody Mary would revive Hogmanay guests with hangovers. I don’t think plan had considered that the staff might also take full advantage of Hogmanay high spirits. The sight of a glassy eyed, deathly pale, visibly shaking and sweating ginger man groaning quietly was clearly deterring any potential customers looking to start day with a fresh tomato juice. It wasn’t going well at all………and that was before I threw up.  

Do you think that techies make good recruiters, and if so why (or if not, why not)?
I think an understanding of and a passion for the technical will make for a good recruiter. Understanding IT is a required foundation but there are also many other qualities that need to be built on that foundation to succeed. 

Who in the Be-IT office makes you laugh, and why?
The Be-IT mob are all quite jolly but there is only one Gareth Biggerstaff. I’m not sure it’s always intentional but there are things that no one else will say in any given situation and laughing is often the only possible reaction.

Why is IT recruitment different from other recruiting jobs (e.g. High Street)? 
The complexity of the technologies available and the myriad of different roles within projects requires a quite a deep level of understanding and communication with the client. IT recruiters who are successful tend to build long relationships with their clients.

What is the funniest thing you’ve seen in your recruitment career? 
A colleague bidding at a charity auction. It was for the use of a large yacht for the day. He was encouraged to get the bidding moving by a client. His face when he realized his was only bid and he had won was priceless.

Favourite food and drink and where in the world would you like to be when you are having them?  
A cold glass of white wine and a large bowl of chips on a sunny winter’s day in the Alps.

Recommend a restaurant and/or bar for us? 
I’ve been meeting friends in The Basement for years, it’s always been a great Edinburgh bar.

What’s your view of the market just now – where are the real challenges?
I think there is increasing demand in the IT sector and as a consequence there is pressure on salaries. This tends to be an uneven pressure; candidates and clients have different views. Candidates want to increase their salary for a move, whereas a client will want to pay what everyone in their team currently gets and this can create a gap in expectations.

Also competition is so high in certain technology areas that I can see them becoming even more contractor driven.

What do candidates need to do better to help you get them a job?
I’d say keeping an open mind is important; there is no such thing as a “perfect job”. Taking time to research new companies and to open dialogue with them may well lead to finding a position in a sector or industry you had not previously thought of.

BBC weather, I commute daily by bike and wind speeds, directions and whether it’s going to rain are fairly major obsessions

LinkedIn: it can be distracting in a “Facebook for people in suits” kind of way but it is also a very powerful networking tool.

If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing you’d buy? 
A very large bottle of champagne
